Abstract: Based on the engineering background of gob-side entry retaining with roadside backfill in panel 3602 of Nantun Colliery, the key parameters of gob-side entry retaining with roadside backfill in thin coal seams with the limestone roof (GERRB-TCS-LR) were studied. The caving style of the limestone roof during the retaining stage was analyzed based on testing the physical and mechanical properties of limestone roof in the laboratory. Considering the caving style, the roof-cutting mechanical model of gob-side entry retaining with roadside backfill was established, the roof-cutting resistance and width of the roadside backfill body were determined as the key parameters for GER-TCS-LR, and the roof-cutting resistance formula was derived. The research results show that if the immediate roof height is greater than the seam height, the roof-cutting resistance and width of the roadside backfill body should meets the requirement of the immediate roof being totally cut along the goaf. The roof-cutting resistance and width of the roadside backfill body were confirmed based on those research results by theoretical calculation and numerical calculation. The research results are applied into the engineering practice successfully, which have great significance to popularize the technique of gob-side entry retaining with roadside backfill in thin coal seams.
